Chapter Six

Falling. Hating the stomach-dropping sensation of descending through the air in dreams, Cooper stirred in his sleep. Lucid enough to realize he needed to get out of the dream, he tried to wake up. His eyelids fluttered but didn’t open. He continued feeling the effects of what his body thought it was experiencing.

No. Not falling. Whizzing upward. Like in a very fast elevator.

His gut churned. Up or down, he didn’t like the rollercoaster effect the movement had on his body. Wanting desperately to be alert, he forced his eyes open.

A bright white light assaulted him. He squinted, but the radiance blocked him from seeing his surroundings. Cooper went to turn his head but the millimeter of movement pained him. It felt like a tight band was wrapped around his skull.

He tried to think about how much he’d had to drink, but grogginess filled his mind like a thick fog sweeping over a desolate bog, veiling any memories or thoughts about…

What had I been doing? Was I going somewhere? With someone?

Cooper squeezed his eyes shut, fighting through the haze to find the answers.

The trip. That’s right. Micha and I are on our way to Tonopah. We stopped off for some afternoon delight and fell asleep.

Clicks and taps sounded around him.

An animal traversing the rocks and coming up on them? He listened closer. No. The sounds weren’t varied enough to be feet and claws scraping on hard surfaces. The modulations were more lyrical, had a certain cadence to them, like a speech pattern.

A language?

The implication of his hypothesis sent fear lancing through him, stripping his nerves raw. He opened his eyes. The light had dimmed.

The fog immediately lifted.

He wished it hadn’t.

A tall and slim figure with long protrusions on its head that pointed up to the sky appeared. It moved closer, revealing to Cooper its huge mouth with thin red lips. What looked to be painted ebony triangles formed above and below its eyes, and small quills protruded from rabbit-like ears. Larger ones acted like whiskers on either side of its bulbous red nose. The pointed protrusions looked like hair, but he doubted they were. Rounded black eyes within a stark-white face regarded him.

An Easter bunny gone bad on meth. Or a rabbit attempting to be a clown. Or a clown who wanted to be a rabbit? Either way, he had a severe dislike of both, and the man who’d decided to dress in such a costume.

Cooper didn’t know who was fucking with them, and most likely drugged him, but it wasn’t funny. “Who the hell are you? I’m going to kick your ass.”

Well, at least that’s what he tried to say. His question and threat came out a garbled mess due to the blockage in his mouth.

They gagged me on top of hopping me up on something? And what about Micha? Where’s my love? What have they done with him?

He attempted to jump up so he could make good on his challenge, but something kept him from doing so. Attempting to move his arms and legs, Cooper found himself naked and bound to a metal table.
